How to Turn Your Patio or Balcony into a Relaxing Oasis in Your Daily Life

6.4.2026

Iltalehti reporter Liisa Lahti wrote an interesting article about a presentation given by Sanna Karmano at the 2026 Spring Fair on decorating patios and balconies. The article explains how to turn your home’s outdoor space into a relaxing oasis that provides a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

The first and most important step is a thorough cleaning. Once the space is clean and uncluttered, its potential becomes clearer and your mind feels more at ease. According to Karman, outdoor spaces shouldn’t be viewed as separate areas, but rather as an extension of the interior. If the living room has a calm color scheme and a soft atmosphere, you should carry that same vibe out to the balcony or terrace. This creates a seamless transition and makes the space a natural part of your home.

According to Karmano, there are four key factors in creating a recovery plan:

Softness and shapes: Soft fabrics and rounded shapes invite you to relax.

Clarity and tidiness: A tidy environment calms the mind when your gaze isn't distracted by clutter.

Plants and Nature: Plants reduce stress levels and bring life to a space.

Light: Soft evening light, in particular, helps the body relax and prepare for rest.

When decorating your patio, choose things you actually like. Whether you prefer bright colors or neutral tones, the most important thing is that the space feels like your own. When a space feels personal, you develop a connection to it and end up spending more time there.

Even if the space is small, it can be divided into different areas:

A haven of relaxation: A peaceful place where you don’t have to do anything. A comfortable chair or sofa, soft textiles, and plants. Place this away from high-traffic areas, such as at the far end of the room.

Active area: For dining or cooking, such as a grill and a dining table. On a smaller balcony, this could serve as a coffee corner.

Living area: A social space for spending time with family and friends. A sofa set or a comfortable chair.
